On September 11, 2024, a public lecture held by Mi You will take place as part of the Mandang Dialogue project at the Total Art Museum (Seoul).
Madang Dialogue is a project of the Gwangju Biennale for the 30th anniversary of the Biennale. Throughout the year, curators who have been associated with the Gwangju Biennale will engage in dialog with artists to critically reflect on the Biennale.
Mi You's lecture deals with David Teh's project RETURNS, which took place as part of the 12th Gwangju Biennale 2018. Based on extensive research in the Gwangju Biennale archive, RETURNS provided a suitable venue to reflect on the history of the biennale and its place in post-Cold War Asia, and to uncover the (un)awareness of self-historicization of artists and curators of the early editions. These reflections provided points of reference for speculation about the future of biennials in general in an increasingly multipolar world.
