Earthly Matter(s) in the Exhibition Space

An Ecological Approach by Friederike Schäfer

On Thursday, November 14 from 6 - 7.30 pm, Friederike Schäfer will give a lecture entitled Earthly Matter(s) in the Exhibition Space at the traces Forschungsstation on Lutherplatz in Kassel.

The propositional notion of Exhibition Ecologies addresses the complex interrelations of exhibitions with ecologies, resources, aesthetics, media, and technology as a global phenomenon. The interrelations are conceived as a multiplicity of ecologies within and between exhibitions, as material, systemic, political and historical realities in which exhibitions take place, and towards a temporal, intellectual, and aesthetic positioning of exhibitions. Exhibition Ecologies addresses exhibitions as a cultural practice that informs and mediates ecological and planetary relationships.
While there has been an upsurge in research both in exhibition studies and environmental humanities, and especially at the intersection of art and ecology within the past ten years, the two fields have not yet been consolidated as a new interdisciplinary research area. The primary goal of the Working Group Exhibition Ecologies is to research ecologies in and through exhibitions and to establish an international research network of scholars working on this subject. This gathering will be followed by a workshop with additional, international guests at the Exzellenzcluster Temporal Communities at FU Berlin in early 2025.
In the first public presentation of Exhibition Ecologies, Friederike Schäfer presents outtakes from her research on ecologies of matter within exhibitions. It addresses the necessity for the development of adequate methodologies to address the complex intersection of exhibitions and ecologies from the perspective of aesthetics and epistemology.

The network Exhibition Ecologies derives from Friederike Schäfers research project on Earth(ly) Matters. How Exhibition Spaces Capture Natural Environments and Mateo Chacón Pinos inquiry The Distinction of Art and Nature. Temporal Epistemologies of Art History in Exhibitions.

The lecture will be held in English.
Registration is not required, admission is free of charge.
