documenta Institut receives scientific advisory board

Since October 21, 2024, the advisory board has supported the documenta Institut


Since October 21, 2024, the activities of the documenta Institut have been supported by an Academic Advisory Board. The board has initially been appointed for a two-year term. Prof. Sabeth Buchmann has been elected as its spokesperson.

The Academic Advisory Board of the documenta Institut held its inaugural meeting on October 21, 2024. In addition to Prof. Sabeth Buchmann, its members include Prof. Isabelle Graw, Prof. Anke te Heesen, and Prof. Annette Tietenberg. The board's initial term runs until October 2026, with plans for gradual expansion and diversification of membership during this period.

The Academic Advisory Board advises the documenta Institute on its academic direction, key research projects, and overall profile within the research landscape. Additionally, it provides guidance on the Institute's development as an independent research institution.

Sabeth Buchmann is Professor of the History of Modern and Postmodern Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. She is a board member of the European Kunsthalle, co-edits the book series PoLyPen. Zur Kritik der Kunstkritik, and is an advisory board member of the journal Texte zur Kunst. She was second managing director of the Austrian Ludwig Foundation from 2018 to 2023. Her latest monograph, Kunst als Infrastruktur, was published in 2023.

Isabelle Graw is Professor of Art History and Art Theory and co-director of the Institute for Art Criticism at Städelschule Frankfurt am Main with Prof. Daniel Birnbaum. She co-founded and edits the journal Texte zur Kunst. She received the Will Grohmann Prize from the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts in 2004 and the Opus Magnum Fellowship from the Volkswagen Foundation in 2018. Recent publications include Three Cases of Value Reflection: Ponge, Whitten, Banksy (2021), Vom Nutzen der Freundschaft, (2022), and Angst und Geld (2024).

Anke te Heesen is Professor of the History of Science at Humboldt University in Berlin, specializing in the history of education and knowledge organization in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. she has been Co-spokesperson for the DFG Research Group – Center for Advanced Studies Applied Humanities – Politics and Genealogy. Her latest monography is titled Revolutionäre im Interview: Thomas Kuhn, Quantenphysik und Oral History (2022).

Annette Tietenberg is a Professor of Art History focusing on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and Vice President of Research and Artistic Development at Braunschweig University of Fine Arts. She serves on the advisory board of the German Society for Studies in Art History, focusing on art theory and historiography, and has curated numerous exhibitions. Her ifa study What Does 'Curating' Mean Today? Potential for Transnational Cooperation was published in 2022.
